This has probably been discussed here ad nauseam but I'm curious about research studies on organic vs. non-organic teas. Also GMO teas...

Here's my original post from the "Naturopathic Medicine" tribe:
http://tribes.tribe.net/naturopathicmedicine/thread/ffbe5bfa-8c42-4b74-bab3-f8ef54db9e82

"Some say that non-organic teas are better tasting and that organic teas really aren't much better than non. Yet, others will say it's more about "Fair-Trade" and sustainable practices. What about Genetic Modification (GMO)? What do the research studies say? What are your thoughts on this issue?"

I would be careful buying tea, coffee (or anything) from China. Also be careful getting tea from Japan.

Also, dose lemon or milk damage the antioxidants in green tea? Supposedly lactose damages the antioxidants in raw cocao (chocolate).

Also, is brewing too long bad too? I like strong tea, and I figure the longer it brews the more antioxidants. I like to brew the tea loose inside the kettle, I pour it through a strainer, and I leave the tea leaves inside to continue steeping until I've drank the entire pot. I drink a lot of green tea.

Any expert tea drinkers out there?

Also, this reading might be of interest to those which do not know of it and have not read it, And maybe those which of you that have, a time to read it again. This is a lovely little book that was written in English in 1906, a hundred years ago it is called, "The Book of Tea" by Kakuzo Okakura. The text can be found here at- www.sacred-texts.com/bud/tea.htm

by Jean Carper USA Weekend

The most potent health drink ever

It's tea time, say intriguing new research findings.
Recent studies in leading medical journals declare tea a potential heart tonic, cancer blocker, fat buster, immune stimulant, arthritis soother, virus fighter and cholesterol detoxifier. Not bad for a lowly shrub soaked in a little hot water.

"Tea is beating all scientific expectations as the most potent health beverage ever," says researcher John Weisburger at the American Health Foundation. "The many ways tea can promote health is truly astonishing."

Bottom line: Each day you should drink three to six 8-ounce cups of tea. It can be black or green, hot or iced, decaf or not.

Here's how tea helps your health:

Saves arteries. Drinking black tea helps prevent deadly clogging of arteries and reverses poor arterial functioning that can trigger heart attacks and strokes, two major new studies have found. In a large 10-year study in the Netherlands, men who consumed the amount of antioxidants called "catechins" found in three cups of black tea were 50% less likely to die of ischemic heart disease, caused by narrowed clogged arteries, than were men who consumed only the catechins in half a cup of tea. In another recent test, Joseph Vita, M.D., of the Boston University School of Medicine, had heart patients drink either plain water or four cups of black tea daily. In a month, impaired blood vessel functioning (a risk factor for heart attack and strokes) improved about 50% in the tea drinkers.

Inhibits cancer growth. Tea has long been tied to a lower risk of stomach, colon and breast cancer, although the connection is not proven. Now lab studies find that tea chemicals actually may stop cancer growth. Rutgers University researchers showed that a compound in black tea called TF-2 caused colorectal cancer cells to "commit suicide"; normal cells were unaffected. "The effect is quite dramatic," said Rutgers professor Kuang Yu Chen, who speculates that the chemical might one day be made into an anti-cancer drug.

Tames inflammation. Researchers at Case Western Reserve University gave arthritis-prone mice either green tea or water. The human equivalent of four cups of green tea daily halved the mice's risk of developing arthritis. Also intriguing: TF-2, the newly discovered anti-cancer compound in black tea, suppresses the Cox-2 gene that triggers inflammation, says research at Rutgers. That's the same way the drugs Vioxx and Celebrex work. Also, in a UCLA study of 600 Chinese men and women, drinking green tea halved the risk of chronic stomach inflammation, which can lead to cancer.

Wipes out viruses. Previous tests prove tea can neutralize germs, including some that cause diarrhea, pneumonia, cystitis and skin infections. New research by Milton Schiffenbauer of Pace University finds that black and green tea deactivates viruses, including herpes. When you drink tea, he says, chances are good you will wipe out viruses in your mouth. Flu viruses, too? Possibly. A recent Japanese study showed that gargling with black tea boosted immunity to influenza. Recent research at Harvard indicated that tea chemicals stimulated gamma-delta T-cells that bolster immunity against bacteria and viruses.

Burns calories. Most surprising, green tea's antioxidant EGCG stimulates the body to burn calories, notably fat. In a Swiss study, a daily dose of 270mg EGCG (the amount in 2 to 3 cups of green tea) caused men to burn 4% more energy - about 80 extra calories a day. Green tea did not increase heart rate, and the calorie burning was not due to caffeine.

Plus: Canadian researchers block cavities in mice by replacing their water with tea. Indian eye researchers have retarded cataracts in rats by feeding the animals tea extract. Israeli scientists block Parkinson's-like brain damage in mice by giving them green tea extract or pure EGCG. W

For the best benefit ...
Drink both black and green tea, the regular kind sold in bags or leaves in grocery stores. Their antioxidants are equal. But green tea boasts special-acting EGCG.
Bottled tea and instant tea have few antioxidants, research shows.
Herbal teas do not have the same health properties as real tea (Camellia sinensis).
Tea with caffeine has slightly more antioxidant activity.
Steep tea leaves or bags in hot water 3 to 5 minutes to thoroughly release antioxidants.
Adding milk to tea does not block absorption of antioxidants, new Dutch research finds.
Don't give much tea to kids. Tea "chelates" iron, removing it from the body. That may help combat chronic disease but can cause anemia in young people.

Anyone try Sulloc Cha? Its a Korean loose leaf tea. THe directions are in a foreign language, but the webite says to use 1-2 spoons(doesn't specify teas or table, I asume teaspoon) per person, and pour half a glass(100ml) of water which was boiled then cooled down 5 minutes to 70-80 degrees celsius, for 1-2- minutes.

I like this taste better than bagged green tea because of the smoother taste and much less bitterness. However, I wish I knew if I am doing this right? I take 2 pinchfuls of the tea and use half cup of cooled down boiled water. The website says the tea can be reused 4 times, but the second time around, the tea tastes like water. Is reusing loose leaf tea a myth or is it like coffee grinds and once you use them, you throw them out?

* Green Tea Harvest Report
* China Tea Tour coming in September
* New Green Teas
* Specialty Tea Class at the Chinatown Teahouse

Spring 2005 Green Tea Harvest

I travel to China each spring in pursuit of the best teas available. Over the past 20 years, I've managed to overcome my anxiety and learned to be cautiously optimistic. The key is to ALWAYS be prepared since the Tea Gods seem to have a way of adjusting my plans, and, if all else fails, go to Yunnan! I made my first tea visit to Yunnan in the mid 1980s, and became a tea professional from hard lessons and unique experiences learned there.
The current economic expansion has changed China’s tea scene perhaps forever. Chinese people have rediscovered the joy of tea and the growing middle class use tea to proclaim their newfound social status. The current wave of tea craze has created supply shortages and incredible demands. Famous high quality teas like Dragon Well, Tie Guan Yin, Wuyi Yan Cha and aged Puerh has become difficult to acquire.

This season’s spring harvest has been affected by very severe snowstorms and other environmental factors. Almost all green tea productions are below their normal levels. The competition to acquire quality tea is simply incredible! The demand and weather condition have lead some tea growers and sellers to lower their production standards to meet the increased demand, tea buyers like me must stay on our toes to keep up!

Under these difficult circumstances, I found myself returning to the most special place of my heart -- the Yunnan province (more about Yunnan below), once again, Yunnan did not disappoint. I am pleased to report that I was able to find some extraordinary teas and get re-acquainted with some old friends as well.
Tea Tour Update
Join us for this year’s September tea tour, experience first hand the exotic homeland of tea and sample fabulous culinary specialties; spend a few days as a tea farmer and share some of Roy Fong’s tea wisdoms by traveling with him for 2 weeks.
VIEW A SAMPLE ITENERARY

Yunnan Spring Tips
Yunnan (meaning The Southern Clouds), located in Southwestern plateau of China, bordering Vietnam, Laos and Burma. Long considered the homeland of tea, the name of Yunnan refers to the exotic frontier nature and high altitude of this area. Yunnan is known for it’s enchanting natural landscape, rich resources, incredible wildlife and plants. Out of some 42 million residence, there are 26 ethnic groups, all with unique cultural diversities, and there seems to be a common bond among all of them, they all LOVE tea!
As you may have guessed, some of the most famous teas on earth come from Yunnan – the world renowned Yunnan black tea and Yunnan Puerh tea have long been prized by tea aficionados worldwide. However, most people do not know that Yunnan produces great green tea! This year, we have acquired a great one for your consideration – Yunnan Spring Tips is selected from this year’s early spring harvest (Yunnan has not been affected by this year’s bad weather), This big tippy green tea is surprisingly gentle with a slight hint of interesting astringency. Distinctive fruity aromatics intertwine with traces of mild smokiness. The golden yellow brew provides a Lush velvety mouth feel and a long and unforgettable finish. One taste of this exotic tea will ease your mind and spirit to the extraordinary land of the “Southern Clouds”.

MORE DETAILS

* This year’s Lotus Heart and Imperial Dragon Well are both unavailable due to bad weather, here are two very good Dragon wells for your consideration:

Mei Jia Wu Dragon Well

Mei Jia Wu is located in the Westlake District of the city of Hangzhou (located in Eastern China, a city so beautiful that Chinese consider Hangzhou the closest human habitat to heaven). It has been long established that some of the best Dragon Well teas comes from the Mei Jia Wu area. This medium sized tip green tea is full of fresh rich flavor with just the right amount of intensity. Mildly sweet and velvety, the finish is gentle and soothing.

MORE DETAILS

Fu Yang Dragon Well
Not as famous as Mei Jia Wu Dragon Well but the higher altitude of 800 meters and the more hearty variety of bushes help avoid damages by abrupt weather conditions. This Dragon Well is well sized and tippy, the mouth feel is well balanced and complex. The brew is brilliantly bright yellowish green with a slight note of floral aromatics.

MORE DETAILS
Imperial Green Tea
This year’s Imperial Green is relatively unaffected by weather, as usual, Imperial Green is beautifully formed with two tender leaves and a single tip. The usual full-bodied lushness and elegant sweetness is easily revealed. This great green tea simply refuses to release any unwanted astringency.

MORE DETAILS
2005 Snow Water Dragon Tips
Named Dragon “Tips” for its sharp and pointed leaves, Snow Water Dragon Tips is a treat for any tea lover, a rare find of such complexity and body. It has a uniquely fresh tone with big full body smoothness, nutty and buttery notes. The bright and clear yellow liquor has just the right amount of chewiness throughout, the finish is delightfully sweet. Like the Dragon, this tea soars above its peers.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a specific brand that is organic? I recently bought a package of Uncle Lee's Tea brand. Its called Organic Chai Green Tea with lemon. As I write this a have cup of it cooling to taste for the first time. Just sampled a few sips. It has a nice aroma rising up from the cup. The chai includes the spices of cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, eleuthero ginseng, chicory, cloves, black pepper, stevia and natural lemon are mild. They don't over power the flavor, just a pleasant taste. I am drinking it straight (nothing added). I just may have a new favorite tea. Let me know about your tea tastings as well. Or, if you have not tasted a particular brand but know of one post that as well.
